THE COMPANY

The beginnings of the Piano Shop go back to 1978 when owners Matthew Grossman and James McGehee were young piano technicians. They met when they were hired to take care of 110 pianos for the University of Memphis.

James (Jim) McGehee has worked full-time in the piano business since 1976. He moved to Denmark in 1979 where he established Mattson & McGehee Pianovaerkstedet, a full service piano business, which became one of the most productive piano sales, service and restoration workshops in Scandinavia.

Jim received extensive training at Steinway & Sons Park Royal London workshop and has presented classes at the European Piano Technicians Guild’s national convention. As a concert tuner and technician, he has serviced instruments for the Royal Danish Orchestra and the Royal Danish Music Conservatory and has prepared concert Steinways for world renowned pianists including Alfred Brendel, Krystian Zimmerman, Andras Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida, Alicia de Larrocha, and Olli Mustonen. Jim moved back to the United States in 1998 where he worked briefly for Steinway of San Francisco before moving back to his home town of Little Rock Arkansas. In Little Rock, Jim established McGehee Piano with his son Max selling and servicing pianos throughout the state.

Jim’s passion for chamber music has lead him to established several chamber music societies including “Music on the Hill” in San Francisco. Jim is a Registered Piano Technician with the Piano Technicians Guild and has written articles for the Piano Technicians Journal and given numerous educational presentations for piano technicians and piano teachers.

Matthew (Matt) Grossman has worked full-time in the piano business for since 1975. He learned the craft of piano tuning, repair and restoration as an employee of Campbell’s Music Co. in Washington, DC. While there, he had the opportunity to serve as a concert piano technician for Campbell’s Steinway Concert and Artists division where he did work for the White House, Wolf Trap, the National Symphony and other high profile venues and customers in the DC area.

In 1978 Matt was hired by the University of Memphis as Piano Technologist with the responsibility for the tuning and maintenance of 110 pianos, teaching a college level course in piano maintenance and supervising a two-year Piano Technician Apprenticeship Program. In 1990 he moved to the University of Louisville to perform similar duties with 160 pianos. In 1995 Matt started his own business as a full-time independent piano tuner/technician.

In 2004 he opened his first retail piano store. From that The Piano Shop was established. Matt is a Registered Piano Technician of the Piano Technicians Guild Inc., has served as a technical consultant to piano factories, written articles for the Piano Technicians Journal and has given numerous educational presentations for piano technicians and piano teachers. Matt has enjoyed leading and serving on the boards of several community and professional organizations. He is a member of the Music Teachers National Association and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

In 2014 The Piano Shop became the Steinway & Sons piano dealer for Kentucky and Southern Indiana including the Louisville and Lexington metropolitan areas. With similar lifelong passions for music and for Steinway pianos Jim and Matt formed a partnership to combine and apply their 80 years of experience to one business: The Piano Shop. Together they are moving The Piano Shop into the future as the premier piano dealership in the region.
